Changes to the Crime Prevention Website

Dear Regular Visitor and not-so-regular Visitor

Some of you keen-eyed people may have noticed that the adverts that appear in the right hand column of most pages on this site have changed.  This is because we’ve teamed up with Google AdSense in an attempt to raise a little extra income to pay for the running costs of the site.  In simple terms we get paid point something of a penny to maybe a couple of pence when an advert is clicked on or has been displayed a set number of times, although it is more complicated than that when you look into it.

So, you’ll get to see approximately four classes of adverts. Those:

• Designed specifically to fit your own on-line profile (E.g. I’m seeing some referring to undertakers, life insurance and young ladies who would like to meet me! If you’re young and female you’ll be seeing ads for cosmetic products and other stuff for ladies)
• For websites you have already visited (E.g. I was on a couple of fancy dress sites recently getting ready for my big Halloween party and so I’m seeing banners for the same sites trying to encourage me to return)
• Relating to the content of the page (E.g. If you’re on a page about windows, you’ll see adverts about replacement windows or maybe glazing)
• Of a general nature (E.g. Invitations to invest your hard-earned money)

Therefore, this means that the adverts you see will be different from the ones I see and they’re also be different if you’re viewing the site from a country outside of the UK. I should also mention that some of the banners look rather stark and that’s because the software turns simple ‘adwords’ into banners to fit our right-hand column. I hope all this makes sense!

It’s all clever stuff really, but the point I want to make, and it’s an important one, is that Ben and I have no control over the adverts that appear and therefore do not know anything about the companies, their products or their services.  Please bear this in mind when you are using the site.

The excellent companies that we most certainly do know about are in our Directory and should you be looking for a service or product to improve your security we would urge you to take a look there first.
