The Crime Prevention Website

Judging by the high volume of news stories about shed burglary and the latest crime statistics it seems that those of us with sheds need to do more to knock this problem on the head.

The home security survey application on my website is still showing the bad news:

In answer to the question ‘How well secured is the garden shed?’ respondents gave the following answers:

  • Very well secured 10.9% (684 respondents)
  • Quite well secured 35.3% (2,212)
  • Not that well secured 29.8% (1,867)
  • I do not have a shed 24% (1,500)

If you strip out the ‘I do not have a garden shed’ answers then the figures look a lot worse...

  • Very well secured 14.4%
  • Quite well secured 46.4%
  • Not that well secured 39.2%

I also know (through one of my other questions) that we overestimate the effectiveness of our home security by more than 30%, which suggests to me that if I was inspecting the shed’s security level the real figures would be more like:

  • Very well secured 10%
  • Quite well secured 30%
  • Not that well secured 60%

So, sheds are in a sorry state with well over half not up to an acceptable standard of security. When you consider what we store in them and the fact that burglars often go into the shed to find a tool to break into the house I think we should all take a closer look.

BUT DO NOT WORRY! Advice is at hand so please follow the link below and better secure your shed, especially important if you’re just about to go away on holiday.
