It’s been a strange quarter for surveys this time around. Overall numbers have fallen a little on the previous quarter, but that’s because January and February are two of the quietest months for website activity. Interestingly, the counties of Kent and Merseyside came in at second and third place, even though my website has no relationship with the police forces there – i.e. our websites aren’t linked. Also, for the first time since launching my website, no surveys at all were conducted by people living in East or West Sussex. Buckinghamshire has slipped right down the table and Berkshire, which is normally in the top five, has dropped out altogether.

Odd as some of these results might seem, the Home Security Survey is still as popular as ever and since the weather started to warm up so has the rate of survey completion.
If you don’t know already I use the anonymous data from the surveys to inform my news stories and advice pages, so the more that are completed the more accurate my findings become.
For example: Garden security is an area where most of us need to make some improvements. Sheds, in particular are still a very big problem for home security with only 14% of respondents telling me that their shed is very well secured. Forty-one percent say their shed is fairly well secured (which means it could be improved) and a huge 35% reckon their shed isn’t very secure at all! And don’t forget that these people are obviously concerned about their security as otherwise they wouldn’t have completed the survey – the national picture is probably worse.
And as if poor shed security isn’t already bad enough too many people are providing the burglar with the tools to break into their homes with 21% of respondents owning up to leaving out tools in the back garden. Thirteen percent of respondents also admit to leaving a ladder out, just in case the burglar needs one to access the open first floor window, which could just as well be the neighbour’s (It doesn’t bear thinking about).
So, if you haven’t yet taken our survey, please have a go and even if you haven’t or don’t intend to I absolutely know that a lot of you need to take action in your garden now!
