I don’t think there is any reliable scientific data to support my theory, but it seems to me that weather conditions sometime play a significant part in crime and crime prevention activity.
It goes like this:
Bad weather at the weekend, particularly heavy rain, tends to reduce both the desire and the practicality for villains to go out and commit property crimes, such as burglary and theft from around the garden. At the same time many of us will postpone going out, which means that more of us will be at home protecting our property.
Good weather, such as we had in the south-east yesterday and on Sunday, means that more of us will make the most of the sunshine and go out for the day leaving our homes unoccupied. A little bit of sunshine will also encourage the thieves to leave their dens in search of some easy opportunities left by those of us visiting the park/shops/Aunty/etc.
However, the villains don’t necessarily win out, because good weather also means that many of us will spend more time in the garden or on the house doing those jobs we’ve been putting off since the autumn. Some of these people will be improving their home security and I know this for a fact, because yesterday (good weather in the SE) saw a huge rise in the number of visits to the Crime Prevention Website – 1,794 sessions. This is just one session short of our previous record, which was also set on a Monday (last year) when the weather was good and although I was expecting this to happen it has come one month earlier than last year. (Global warming means more visits to my website? Where am I going with this?)
So what is all this telling me? Well it’s telling me that I’m not very good at theorizing and we should all just carry on doing those sensible home security improvements before the sun begins to warm us up and the villains start hitting the streets.
