The Crime Prevention Website

Just last week I published an article (sent to me my Essex Police) about the problem of car key burglary and here we are again with yet another one, this time occurring in Long Eaton, Derbyshire.

The very short press release from Derbyshire Constabulary says this:

A burglar has targeted a home in Long Eaton, stealing the victim’s keys and car from the drive.

Sometime between 8.10pm and 8.35pm on Sunday, February 7, a thief sneaked in through the unlocked back door of a house in Derby Road while the homeowners were inside.

They took three handbags, two bicycles and [a] white BMW 1 Series.

Anyone with information should call DC Lesley Smith on 101, quoting crime reference number 5773/16, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

There are some interesting crime prevention issues worth thinking about:

  1. The crime occurred after dark – was there any lighting to the side or rear of the house?
  2. The thief entered the house through an unlocked back door showing us that the occupiers had a low expectation of crime and so were not practising a nightly locking up routine (KOPCAR)
  3. The thief was able to gain access to that back door – how did the thief do this? Did the thief have to climb over a locked gate or fence? (It doesn’t seem like it)
  4. The victims were at home, but where? Perhaps watching the TV at the front of the house?
  5. The report states it was a single burglar, but with two bicycles having been stolen along with the handbags and the car it would seem to suggest more than one, unless the thief made repeated trips into the house and then loaded up the vehicle with the stolen goods. If this is the case then it shows us just how easy it was to commit this crime.

I’m sure you will agree with me that once again we can learn from the unfortunate victims’ mistakes and easily avoid this type of crime, which, let’s face it, really shouldn’t be happening!
