One of my wife’s elderly clients was telling her today about a strange telephone call she had received from an Indian sounding gentleman purporting to be from BT. He said that there was a problem with her computer and he could help her fix it. He asked that she go onto her computer and log in and he would be able to sort it out for her – for nothing as it was all part of the BT service.
Fortunately my wife’s clients are now all well-trained in the virtues of crime prevention (and not believing a word they are told by cold callers), since I often discuss the latest scams with them when they’re waiting to see Julia for their appointment. So, Mavis didn’t fall for the scam and everything is fine. It seems that the scam is pretty much identical to the one reported by Ben last week and so I thought it would be useful to link to that news item so that you can listen to the recorded conversation that Ben had with the scammers (Plenty of swearing towards the end of the recording by the way, but funny).
If you get a cold call from someone who reckons he or she is going to fix a problem on your computer just hang up. IT WILL BE A SCAM! Their objective is to take control of your computer and try to obtain useful info such as passwords so they can steal all your money.
PS This call was absolutely not from BT - just to make clear!
Last week’s story, which is worth circulating to your friends and families http://thecrimepreventionwebsite.com/b/1449/crime-prevention-news/2016/jan/14/ben-received-a-scam-call-today/
