The Crime Prevention Website

I was sat in the hairdresser’s shop this morning ear-wigging a conversation between the customer before me and the barber.

“Did you have a good weekend Sir?” asked the barber. (This is how most Monday morning conversations begin at the barbers)

“No I bloody well didn’t!” protested the customer. “I got f*c*ing burgled (mind the French)” he continued, whilst I looked up from the barber's copy of the Sun newspaper.

“I think you’ll find that word to have an Anglo Saxon or perhaps Scandinavian origin Sir” responded the rather clever barber (they often are).  “Tell me”, he continued, “What happened?”

“Well”, said the obviously frustrated customer (who was having a number 3 by the way) “They got in through the back window on Saturday afternoon. The bas*tards got me spade out of the shed. The window weren’t locked, but I don’t see what difference it would have made, cuz they would have got in anyway. “

“What makes you say that Sir?” (Lots of snipping going on at this stage) “Because we’ve got a retired policeman who comes in here for his regular cut and he reckons that it’s definitely worth it, because if the lock doesn’t put off the thief it will certainly buy you time and cause the burglar to make a lot more noise. I’ve got two locks on all of my windows”

“Maybe, I suppose you could be right, but I ain’t so sure it would make a huge difference” responded the doubtful customer.

“Well, I’m only saying Sir; it just seems to make a whole lot of sense to me”

“Anything for the weekend Sir?” enquired the barber as he was brushing off the loose hair from the back of the man’s neck?”

“Well, certainly not another burglary!” came the instant and sort of amusing reply.

He upped, paid and went and I jumped into the hot seat for my turn.

“A number 4 all round please Chris” I requested.

“Funny how some people just don’t get it, isn’t it Calvin?  He’s probably not insured anyway, but if he was they probably would pay out, would they?”

“No, they probably wouldn’t Chris, but hey, you can lead a horse to water.....”

“Did you have a nice weekend Sir?”

“As a matter of fact Chris - yes! I had an excellent weekend”

Such are the conversations I enjoy at the barbers.

Crime happens because there is an opportunity to commit it. Please don’t make the thief’s job easy.
