I always ask if this year is going to be the year you secured your home, because from the extra activity I can see on The Crime Prevention Website at the moment (which grows to a peak around April/May) it is pretty obvious that many of you are saying “Yes” and that’s good!
You all know by now that property crime happens for the reason of opportunity. If you’re saying to yourself “Why me?” it’s simply because your home, your car or your handbag or wallet or phone was the one that stood out from the rest as being an easy (or easier) target.
Each year I reassess my own home security arrangements and each year I do something extra or maybe different to reduce my risks. Last year I installed a new alarm system, the year before I added some extra outside lighting and the year before that I installed a new enhanced secure main entrance door. I haven’t yet decided what I’m going to do this year, but I think it’s the turn of the side gate and some extra height.
So, if you’re planning some DIY for this year, which might involved new windows, doors, a new extension or maybe some garden improvements, please add a little thought for security and search around this site for some extra advice.
You know it makes sense!
