The Crime Prevention Website

An important new report from the Home Office concerning vehicle theft has just been published. Reducing criminal opportunity: vehicle security and vehicle crime analyses trends in vehicle security devices and tries to determine the extent to which improved security has driven down vehicle-related theft in England and Wales and other nations.

So far I’ve just scanned the Executive summary, but already it looks to be a really informative piece of work, which should help encourage the motor industry to start taking the next important steps to help us prevent vehicle crime.

I see the online Telegraph newspaper reported on it on 4January and highlighted a couple of stand-out aspects of the report, which included ‘Pinch and Park’. This is where the villains steal a high value vehicle and park it safely for a few days to see if it attracts police interest. If the police do not recover it then this is a sure guide that the vehicle has not been fitted with a tracking device, allowing them to remove the vehicle from the secure parking place into their workshop where they will work on it to alter its identity before selling it on.
