Well, what a very long Xmas and New Year period that was! Lots of visitors have rather kept me away from the website these past couple of weeks, but expect normal service to be resumed next week.
I’ve just started to write my New Year newsletter and so I’m delving into the website’s facts and figures, just so you can see where we’re going. What I can say is that 2015 saw a large increase in the number of visitors to the site, which is great news, but importantly the numbers of pages read by each visitor has remained pretty well constant. Here’s the raw data:
2013 229K visits viewing 417K pages
2014 384K visits viewing 638K pages
2015 445K visits viewing 719K pages
We’re very pleased with the figures and hope to reach an ongoing annual audience of around 500K by the end of this year – there are only so many people who visit a site like ours! That said who knows what’s round the corner? If crime started to go up again – nationally – then my bet is that our visitor figures will go up too.
Ben has started to make preparations for the website to be moved onto a new control panel, which will make editing a lot easier for me and I’m now pulling together new information to complete my advice pages for small businesses.
Our latest winter prize draw in conjunction with our friends at Switched on Products is going really well with many more people doing that Home Security Survey, which brings me to the main point of this short New Year message...
Nationally, the amount of burglary and theft from around the home and crime in general has, as we know, been falling for a number of years now, but this doesn’t mean that the crime along your street has been doing the same. That’s the trouble with national statistics, because whilst they are useful to gauge the national picture they are pretty much meaningless in respect to your local neighbourhood. You can sometimes say the same for smaller geographical areas too, such as the Wards across London. For example I’ve just looked at the last three years crime figures for a Ward in West London and compared these with a street within that Ward. The Ward’s crime is down about 10% over the three years, but crimes along the particular street I’m interested in has gone from 44 in 2012/13 to 58 in 2013/14 and now 66 in 2014/15 and increase of 50%!
If you want to know more about the crime down your street you might like to go onto Police.uk. Pop in your postcode and then find your street on the map. You can draw around your street and then search for its crime reports. You can then compare your street’s crime rate with all those around you and with the Ward or Borough/District etc. Once you’ve done that why not carry out a free Home Security Survey on this website and find out what you should be doing to secure your home.
There’s still 359 days left this year (It’s a leap year!), which is plenty of time to make 2016 the year you secured your home.
