Here are links to three Christmas burglary stories that have appeared in the media during that last few days. They are just the tip of the iceberg. I was particularly touched by Alexandra Mahjouri's open letter to her Christmas burglars (In the Derby Telegraph), telling them how badly their actions have affected her family.
- Community rallies after Barrow Christmas burglary NW Evening Mail
- Mum writes open letter to thank Christmas burglars BBC News
- Thieves take Christmas presents in Carpenders Park burglary Watford Observer
These burglaries, although they seem particularly dreadful during this festive season, do not come as a surprise to the police service or any of us involved in the security industry. In fact, the Christmas period and New Year period probably sees an increase in crime opportunity since people will be out more often visiting family and attending Christmas parties and there will be wrapped and often expensive gifts all in one place around the tree.
As burglars don’t care much about Christmas and certainly don’t give a damn about peoples’ feelings (as otherwise they wouldn’t do it) please take heed of all the advice you are being given by your local police:
- Make sure your place really is physically secure when you go out and go to bed at night
- Use the alarm if you have one
- Absolutely leave lights on when you go out so that your home doesn’t stand out in the street as being the one unoccupied
- Let your neighbours know that you’re going out or going away
- Make 2016 the year that you properly secured your home.
- Make Home Security your Number One priority!
