The Crime Prevention Website

Each year during Diwali police observe a small increase in crimes such as burglary, thefts from cars and street robberies, including gold chain snatches and so they’ve been busy issuing safety messages to those celebrating this special day.

For example Leicester police from the area’s Keyham Lane police station are sending Diwali greeting cards, which contain a broad range of crime prevention and safety advice, to thousands of homes in the area. The 12,000 cards are being delivered by volunteers from the Prince’s Trust. And officers in Nottingham have been issuing safety messages to households pointing out the dangers of lighting divas or candles during the Hindu festival.

Police are particularly advising people to be discreet with their valuables while they’re out in public, including wearing a scarf to cover expensive gold necklaces or chains. They’re also urging residents to make sure they properly secure their homes when they are out for even a short time attending events.

In addition, many police services are increasing patrols across neighbourhoods during the festival, especially tonight.

If you are out tonight do please leave plenty of lights on to give the impression that you are at home and maybe let your trusted neighbour know that your home will be unoccupied for a few hours tonight.

Above all enjoy your celebrations!
