A small, outback town in New South Wales plagued by disadvantage and a reputation for crime is an unlikely global pioneer in a new approach to justice designed to keep young people out of prison.

A promising trial in Bourke of 'justice reinvestment' – in which funds are diverted from jails to the community and crime prevention – could be expanded nationally, an official reception at Government House in Sydney has been told.

The NSW governor, General David Hurley, said Bourke – which in 2012 had an assault rate higher than that of any country in the world – could be the model for a new approach to justice.

"We are beginning to see good, solid results – results that are transferable to other communities," he said on Tuesday.

"Justice reinvestment has the potential to turn communities around. By investing in crime prevention rather than prisons, communities will be safer.".........
