The Crime Prevention Website

“BURGLARS BEWARE - SENTINEL IS WATCHING YOU!” is the message coming from Gateshead’s Community Safety Board as they target the borough’s houses at most risk of being burgled.

Residents in South Gateshead are the focus of a new community safety initiative, called Operation Sentinel, aimed at burglary-proofing homes that are occupied by the elderly and most vulnerable residents.

Officers from Gateshead’s Neighbourhood Policing Team are making door-to-door crime prevention visits this week to check their properties and advise on ways to prevent the house becoming a prime target for burglars.

The Gateshead South Neighbourhood Police Team have provided training on crime prevention to local partners including Gateshead Housing Company, Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service and teams within Gateshead Council who work directly with vulnerable residents.

This includes raising awareness with Trading Standards, the Private Rented Sector Housing Team, Community Safety and Adult Social Care.

Northumbria Police’s Neighbourhood Police Inspector for Gateshead South, Michael Robson, said: "We’re working with our partners on this initiative to help them understand what makes someone and their home more likely to be a victim of a burglary.

"Our partners can help us identify those who are more vulnerable, and have the potential to be victim to crime, so we can get to them first, give them the advice they need and stop them from becoming a potential victim of burglary.”

It’s interesting to note that the police service is now training other services in crime prevention, presumably so that they can identify crime opportunity when they make their various visits to the target households. In the light of reducing police budgets I am very much in favour of this approach, which is also being used by police services in other parts of the country.
