Yes, that’s right! This article from Australia is telling us that the police in Coolum on the Sunshine Coast Queensland are encouraging local residents to dob a hoon.
Translated into UK English this means ‘report to the police (dob) anyone who is driving their car in an anti-social manner (hooning)’ (I had to look those words up!)
I’m always fascinated by the enormous variety of English words and their different pronunciations and various dialects of the language. The week before last at the Olympia Beer festival I heard a broad Devonshire man tell is mate to ‘Driesh ‘em ‘een’ – buy your round of drinks! I hadn’t heard that expression in years!
I was in Knightsbridge on Saturday night where I witnessed hooning by lots of young rich kids in their Ferraris (Me and my friends saw at least six of them). They’d slow right down to allow the traffic queue ahead to move forward and then put their foot down to catch them back up creating the most enormous acceleration din in the process. I can see why the local residents have been complaining. I hope more of them dob these hoons to the police!
