THE cost of rural claims is down in the South West, according to recent figures.
According to a National Farmers Union (NFU) Mutual survey, the national cost of rural crime totalled £37.8 million in 2014 – a 15 per cent reduction on 2013 figures.
The South West saw a reduction from £5.5 million to approximately £5 million.
Superintendent Geoff Wessell, rural crime lead for Avon and Somerset Police, said: “We are delighted to see that the NFU figures show a reduction in rural claims this year.
“We have been working hard with our partners agencies, neighbouring constabularies and the rural and farming communities to reduce crime and it is very encouraging to see positive results.”

TCPW Comment: This is really good news for our rural communities, but considerably greater falls could be realised with greater use of crime prevention techniques, which includes simple and cost free opportunity removal. I’ve just come back from a weekend in Leominster, Herefordshire and whilst I can understand why the trusting community there feel relaxed about their security (my wife’s from a farming background) this attitude to life can sometimes present the opportunities the visiting thief is looking for.
