WATCH OUT residents of Hillingdon in West London!!
One of my wife’s clients had a chat with me today about an incident that nearly resulted in the emptying of her bank account.
The elderly lady in question answered a call at the door from a young black guy wearing a black casual jacket displaying Virgin’s logo. He had in his possession a pad of what appeared to be genuine self-duplicating Virgin headed order forms. He told her that Virgin was doing a great deal on sim cards at the moment and could he come in and explain. She and her husband invited him in.
He asked if he could use the toilet and after some time upstairs came back down and sat in their lounge to discuss the deal.
They decided to go for the cards (they were already Virgin customers) and he started filling in his form. He said that he would arrange to take the money by Direct Debit and so asked for various details including the sort code, account number and password.
She gave him the password and sort code, but just as she was about to read out the account number something made her stop. She thought ‘Hang on, we’re already Virgin customers, so why does he want our bank details?’ Feeling uneasy she told the guy that she did not want to proceed. With that the ‘rep’ almost threw the form at her and stormed off.
Fortunately nothing appears to have been stolen from the bedrooms upstairs.
LUCKY LADY!!!!
She has since changed her password and after our little chat she will be phoning the local police on 101 and I have printed off a ‘No uninvited callers’ sign to display on her door.
Lessons to be learnt.......
- Never, ever give anyone your password – ever! NOT EVER!!!!!!!!
- If some deal seems too good to be true....IT IS!!
- Never do business with unsolicited callers at the door or on the phone
- Never invite an unsolicited caller into your home
If you live in Hillingdon please let your neighbours know about this.
