The Crime Prevention Website

If you work for the police as a police officer, a PCSO, a detective or as a member of the police staff how about checking into the Crime Prevention Website when you get to work?

As you know, the police service’s priorities are to prevent crime, to keep the peace and to do their level best to bring offenders to justice if a crime has been committed. You’ve probably noticed that preventing crime comes and always has come first.

So how much do you know about crime prevention?

When I joined the Met police back in ’78 I must admit that with all that rushing from one call to the next I didn’t give much thought to preventing crime, mainly because there was some old Sergeant in the dusty back office with lock displays on the wall whose job that was. It wasn’t until much later, when I took on a permanent beat, that I realised just how effective crime prevention could be.

The trouble today is that police budget cuts have meant fewer crime prevention staff and so the onus for preventing crime is falling more and more onto the shoulders of the patrolling police officer or PCSO.

That’s why a brief visit to the Crime Prevention Website each day to read just one or two pages will help you come to grips with this interesting world! And believe me (as I have the T-shirt), when you pass on your new learning to a victim of crime you’ll feel so much better for it; and so will the victim.

So, can I suggest you start with this short guide to burglary prevention (written for the police) and then follow it up with the pages below in order before you release your fingers to search the rest of the site?

The Crime Prevention Website is a free resource for everybody, including the police and that’s why fourteen English police services are linking to it from their own websites.

If you like what you read or would like me to add extra stuff just get in touch using Feedback on each page or Contact.
