I’m running a bit of campaign across London at the moment trying to encourage the Neighbourhood Watches there with websites to link up with TCPW. TCPW is already linked with the London Neighbourhood Watch Association and with the Metropolitan Police (and several NW sites) so I’m obviously hoping to add a couple more London Watches to my Partners Page.
During my search for Neighbourhood Watch websites I discovered that some of them used to rely on their Local Authorities to provide the site. With cut backs in community safety it seems that a few of these schemes have now lost their websites, which is such a shame. If there’s anyone out there who lives in a London Borough that does not have its own Neighbourhood Watch website and would like to help fund one I’m sure your local scheme would love to hear from you!
On the bright side I’m pleased to report a new reciprocal link with Bromley Neighbourhood Watch Association. The Association covers a very large part of Bromley and has over 700 coordinators serving the local community. Like all well-run Watches they have set their clear objectives which are:
- To help prevent crime by improving security, increasing vigilance, creating and maintaining a caring community and reducing opportunities for crime by increasing crime prevention awareness
- To assist the police in detecting crime by promoting effective communication and the prompt reporting of suspicious and criminal activity
- To reduce undue fear of crime by providing accurate information about risks and by promoting a sense of security and community spirit, particularly amongst the more vulnerable members of the community
- To improve police/community liaison by providing effective communications through Neighbourhood Watch messaging systems which warn Co-coordinators of local crime trends which they can disseminate to their scheme members, and by members informing the police of incidents when they occur
The Bromley site has lots of information on it and is well worth a visit. If you fancy helping out I’m sure they will be very pleased to hear from you – you can easily contact them via their website.
With cut-backs to both police budgets and local authority community safety departments I don’t think there has ever been a more important time for the Neighbourhood Watch movement.
