The Crime Prevention Website

In online ‘getreading’ last week there was a report about 3 burglaries in two days in Caversham.

Police are warning local people to secure their homes after three burglaries in two days.

  • Monday, February 16 between 3.45pm and 4.45pm. Jordan Close. Jewellery stolen. Burglars smashed a window to gain entry
  • Tuesday, February 17 between 8am and 11.30pm. Clifton Park Road. Electrical items and a vehicle stolen. Small pane of glass in the front door was smashed
  • Tuesday, February 17 between 10.30am and 5.30pm. Peppard Road. Nothing stolen. Side door was (possibly) forced.

PC Stephen McArthur from local CID in Reading made the point that tackling burglary is one of [Thames Valley Police Force’s] priorities and officers will do everything they can to find the offenders and bring them to justice. He suggested that people visit their website for information and advice and call 101 if anyone has concerns, requires police assistance or has information about these crimes - or anonymously call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

I’ve talked about unnecessary crimes before and although the story gives only the briefest of details about the M.Os. used it does seem that at least two of these burglaries might fall into this category –

‘Small pane of glass in the front door was smashed’ suggests that having smashed the glass, a hand was put through the hole and the knob on the back of the nightlatch was turned to open the door. Quick and easy! Had the door been deadlocked using a mortice deadlock or a multi-point lock then the outcome might have been very different.

It’s also interesting to note that glass was smashed in the first incident as well. We can only guess at the details of this M.O., but clearly the thieves weren’t too worried about the noise and maybe that’s because it was that insecure toughened glass that so many of us have in our windows, which makes next to no noise when smashed with a sharp instrument.

Finally, in the last burglary the householders came home to find the side door wide open and the police can only say it was possibly forced because they saw a few tool marks.  This door doesn’t appear to have been very secure then.

I know it’s easy for me to pontificate after the event, especially since I have very little to go on, but these sorts of accounts in the press and on police websites are all too common and demonstrate that many people out there simply haven’t done as much as they can to protect their homes.

Please say to yourself this week that ‘2015 is the year I protected by home from thieves’ and make it happen.  You know it makes sense!
