The Metropolitan Police in Bexley will be holding a series of surgeries for motorists across the borough and handing out free tamper-proof number-plate screws to help prevent motor vehicle crime.
Local Safer Neighbourhoods Team (SNT) officers from across the borough will be out on Thursday 22 January handing out the anti-theft screws and giving motorists crime prevention tips on how to protect their vehicle and belongings from thieves.
Motorists will be given packs of special screws that can be fitted on to their number plates. The specially-designed screws stop thieves from undoing them to prevent the number plate from being stolen.
Local officers will also be on hand to talk to anyone about other general issues of crime or antisocial behaviour in their local area.
PC Dan Ellen, from the Belvedere SNT, who has organised the events said:
“We have seen thieves targeting vehicle number plates across Bexley and this event is about trying to raise awareness and helping people protect their vehicles against them. The thieves generally steal the number plates so that they can then use them on other vehicles and go on to commit other crime such as petrol theft, so it has a knock-on effect.
If we can prevent even just one person from becoming a victim of such a crime, then this event will have been worthwhile. This is happening all across the borough, and I’m keen that we help as many motorists as possible, so I would really encourage people to come along on the day.”
Officers have teamed up with local garages and businesses and will be at the following locations on Thursday 22 January across Bexley:
